Ostrakon, die Tonscherbe, auch Kalksteinsplitter, wurde bereits im alten ägyptischen Reiche [1686] viel als Ersatz des Papyrus gebraucht und war viel billiger. Sie diente in griechisch-römischer Zeit für Geschäftsangelegenheiten des täglichen Handels, Empfangsbestätigungen, Steuerquittungen und für private Aufzeichnungen (in der Schule und für Rechnungen). In koptischer Zeit schrieb man weniger Quittungen auf O. als Gebete, Bibelstellen und Briefe. In byzantinischer Zeit werden die griechischen O. immer seltener, weil die Bevölkerung Ägyptens immer mehr koptisch sprach und schrieb. Vgl. im einzelnen W. Schubart Papyruskunde 42.
