My dear King
It gave me a heartful pleasure that an allusion thrown out at random found an echo in a letter from you. What you write carries me back to days the memory of which will ever be dear to me. I am glad that the Hanoverian ribbon, for which I saw you enter the lists, sword in hand, holds good with you not less than with me as a bond of fellowship. I wish it were given to you to visit | Europe once more that, as I did with Motley several times and last in 1872, we might enjoy the social cup less copiously, alas, but as heartily as in times of yore, when I learned your english and mended your german. The enclosed photograph I have authenticated for fear you should fail to recognize your sincerely attached friend
